surl - make short URLs using various sites

Postby medigeek » Tue Feb 09, 2010 9:29 pm

surl is a URL shortening command line application that supports various sites. It supports stdin or filename input. It grabs the URLs, converts them, and returns the same text that was used in the input. It is known to work with a wealth of services, such as bit.ly, goo.gl, tinyurl.com and tr.im.

The currently supported sites are a.gd, a.nf, bit.ly, burnurl.com, chilp.it, clck.ru, cli.gs, decenturl.com, digg.com, goo.gl, is.gd, kl.am, kurl.it, liip.to, metamark.net, piurl.com, ri.ms, sn.im, snipr.com, snipurl.com, snurl.com, srnk.net, tinyurl.com, tr.im, turl.ca, twurl.nl, u.nu, ur.ly, zi.ma, and zz.gd.

My main intention was to build a module for other python applications. But I ended up creating an all-around command line application too! To my knowledge, none of the services support a function like opening a text file or echo-ing a result, then scanning for urls and finally using a short-url service to return the full text (or just the links) with the shortened URLs.
As far as I know, only a gui app like gwibber (twitter/identica client) does something similar.
