InstantOn is interesting but it seems a lot like Splashtop - a minimal function, simple interface OS

If you disable hal from startup you can get 10 second (or less) boot with karmic and lucid on SSD. I also like netbook remix for a similarly simple, but more robust interface.

Faster boot

Hal is the hardware discovery/enumeration service daemon. It's gotten so huge they are deprecating the project and have already ported most of the functionality to udevd - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Halsectomy

For some reason it still comes preinstalled, but as of 9.10 or 10.04 you can now disable hal.

Not having the daemon enumerate already detected devices speeds up your boot time noticeably in some cases.

-bluetooth (if you don't have a device)
-brltty
-jetty

I might be wrong but I think that hal is removed or not used at all from Ubuntu 10.04 and thus the faster booting.

Oddly it hasn't been removed, just deprecated. The "Halectomy" transition isn't complete according to the link i pasted.

The faster booting (i'm almost certain) is from upstart and sreadahead and the fact that services start up in stages simultaneously instead of waiting for one to complete before starting the next. sreadahead provides the SSD optimization.

In Ubuntu 6.10, which was released several years ago, Canonical introduced a new event-based boot daemon called Upstart to replace the traditional System-V init. One of the primary advantages of Upstart is that it is highly conducive to parallelizing the boot process. In previous versions of Ubuntu, Upstart has largely been used with traditional init scripts. Karmic is the first version where it's really being used to its full potential. On an interesting side note, Upstart has been gaining a whole lot of traction in the mobile space and is used in both the Palm Pre and Nokia's upcoming N900.
